Unheard Voice & Employee Well Being

The overall goal of this research is to examine how worker health and well-being vary based on the degree to which leaders are receptive to employee voice. We are conducting a series of studies to better understand the relationship between the voice process and factors such as risk-taking behaviors and employee well-being over time. We are also developing an observational measurement tool for assessing leader behavior in voice interactions and designing interventions to improve teamwork and leadership.

Current Projects

Leader Receptivity: This project is about understanding what happens when employees speak up and leaders do not take adequate action. Through interviews with healthcare workers and qualitative analysis of transcripts, we aim to develop theory explaining the consequences of leader receptivity, or their openness and willingness to take action.

(UFF) The Effect of Leader Receptivity on Worker Health: The overall goal of this project is to examine how worker health and well-being vary based on the degree to which leaders are receptive, and to examine how outcomes differ across demographic subgroups. We will achieve this goal by addressing three aims: (1) understand the relationship between receptivity and health and well-being over time, and contributing factors, (2) examine subgroup differences, including any cross-cultural effects in leader-employee voice interactions, and (3) develop an observational measurement tool for assessing leader behavior in voice interactions to inform intervention strategies to base future work.
